Con sus 60 cm de longitud con las alas extendidas y 25 a 30 cm de alto, el cernícalo es el halcón más pequeño de América. Es un ave de vuelo muy ágil y veloz, que se alimenta de aves, roedores, reptiles, anfibios e insectos, agarrando a sus presas con unas poderosas garras.
The American Kestrel, with its 60 cm long outstretched wings and 25 to 30cm tall, the kestrel is the smallest falcon in America. It is a very agile and fast-flying bird that feeds on birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians and insects, grabbing its prey with powerful claws.
Se diferencia entre el macho y la hembra en que esta última tiene las alas color café rojizo con manchas negras y la cola rojiza con bandas negras, mientras que el macho presenta solo una banda negra al final de la cola y las alas color gris azulado.
It differs between the male and the female in that the latter has reddish-brown wings with black spots and a reddish tail with black bands, while the male has only a black band at the end of the tail and blue-grey wings.
Se puede encontrar desde Alaska y Canadá hasta el extremo sur de Sudamérica, preferentemente en ambientes abiertos como pastizales, pampas, desiertos y matorrales, desde el nivel del mar a los 3800 metros de altitud.
It can be found from Alaska and Canada to the southern tip of South America, preferably in open environments such as grasslands, prairies, deserts and scrublands, from sea level to 3,800meters of altitude.
