Este es uno de los dos armadillos posibles de encontrar en Patagonia. También conocido como peludo, con un peso va desde 1,5 a 3,6 kg, es el más grande de los armadillos presentes en Chile. Su cabeza tiene forma triangular y se encuentra cubierta de placas, mientras que su cuerpo lo cubre una fuerte coraza que presenta entre 6 y 8 bandas articuladas y pelos largos y rígidos. Su coloración es café grisáceo, que lo camuflan perfectamente con el suelo. Esta especie se puede encontrar desde Bolivia y Paraguay hasta el sur de Argentina y Chile. En Chile se le puede encontrar desde la Región del Biobío hasta Magallanes.
The armadillo; this is one of the two armadillos possible to find in Patagonia. Also known as hairy, with a weight ranging from 1.5 to 3.6 kg, it is the largest of the armadillos present in Chile. Its head is triangular in shape and covered with plates, while its body is covered by a strong cuirass that has between 6 and 8 articulated bands and long, stiff hairs. Its colour is greyish brown, which perfectly camouflages it with the ground. This species can be found from Bolivia and Paraguay to southern Argentina and Chile. In Chile it can be found from the Biobío Region to Magallanes.
Habita preferentemente en ambientes de pastizal, estepas y matorrales y es de hábitos nocturnos, aunque es común observarlo de día. Vive el interior de madrigueras que construyen excavando con sus poderosas garras. Al verse amenazado se refugia al interior de estas madrigueras o bien comprime su cuerpo formando una pelota, protegiéndose con las placas de su caparazón. Es un animal omnívoro, que se alimenta de insectos, vegetales, frutos, huevos y carroña.
It inhabits preferably in grassland, steppe and scrub environments and is nocturnal, although it is common to observe it during the day. It lives inside burrows that they build by digging with their powerful claws. When threatened, it takes refuge inside these burrows or compresses its body into a ball, protecting itself with the plates of its shell. It is an omnivorous animal, which feeds on insects, vegetables, fruits, eggs and carrion.
